REGALO: THE GIFT
CHALLENGES:
Due to an imposing slope, composed mainly of imported boulders, and leeched earth, this relatively large rear garden had very poor access, and was difficult to enjoy. An existing concrete slab, cracked and unsightly, had been sinking into the ground for a number of years. More than just an eyesore, this slab had become a safety hazard. Poor irrigation was identified as the source of the problem. The boulder-retained slope rose abruptly with an uncomfortable proximity to the home. Thorny bushes and weeds choked the backend of the property, rendering it both visually unappealing and totally inaccessible.
SOLUTIONS:
The existing concrete-patio was demolished; its rectangular shape was replaced with a more graceful, curved-edge patio, composed of attractive tumbled-paving-stone. To offer all-season use of this patio, a generous cedar roof covers an ample section, allowing users to lounge and dine outdoors, while being protected from the elements.
A new French-Drain was laid, sending excess waters around either side of the residence, and effectively protecting the home from deleterious hydraulic effects. This solution has proved both effective and economical.
In response to the severe slope, several curved planters were built in front of the boulders (awkwardly placed as hill-consolidation): these reduce the abrupt-wall effect by gently terracing up the land. What once was a shocking rise is now transformed by this harmonious blend of horizontal sweeps…
Just above the boulder line, an upper patio and path have been scalloped from the upper slope. This also contributes to alleviating the imposition of the looming slope face, while offering a grand area to circulate, and appreciate the wide vistas available at that height. Bramble bushes were removed from the dense rear-thicket, and desirable trees thinned and pruned; thus opening and deepening the view, providing an ideal backdrop for the more formal setting below. Expertly selected plants blend from indigenous plants towards the beds with their vibrant displays of perennials, punctuating the garden with strong splashes of colour and varied foliage. Distinctive multilevel plantations were created, which lend an impressive sense of space to the entire landscape.
The upper and lower patio areas are linked by a stately curved stairway, making a strong visual presence with a unique design, offering an inviting promenade for this garden.
This striking landscape marries artistic originality with respect for natural forms. The result is both discreet and majestic. More importantly, lives are transformed: The garden is now a welcoming space, which can accommodate many guests, giving them an endless array of experiences renewed with each passing season.
